Red Bug Slough Preserve
This site, part of the county’s environmental lands program, contains beautiful mesic hammock habitat that is just waiting for birders to document what lives there. Well known for fallouts of warblers during migration, this property also provides habitat for species such as Belted Kingfishers, Green Herons, Limpkins, Wood Ducks and Mottled Ducks. Least Terns are a surprising visitor to the slough during the spring and summer. The short, developed trail system at the main parcel is easy walking through the hammock and along the slough; the more adventurous may want to look into the adjoining, undeveloped parcel to the northwest that contains denser understory.
