Duval Audubon Monthly Program: “Life as a Seabird” (Virtual)

February 15 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for this exciting online presentation!

Seabirds are a fascinating group of birds, from their unique adaptations to harsh ocean conditions to their incredible diversity throughout the world. Seabirds can be elusive during a majority of their life over the open ocean, thus making them difficult to study. However, technology is opening the door to their life over open water. We will explore some of the new information collected on seabirds through GPS systems. We will also look at some of the more unusual seabirds around the globe and their fascinating behaviors. Finally, we will meet some of our local Florida seabirds and discuss what is being done to provide for their conservation.

Dr. Caroline Stahala is the Seabird/Shorebird Program Manager for the western Florida panhandle. Her focus is on helping local municipalities implement seabird conservation measures, educating locals, and garnering support for local nesting and wintering seabirds. Caroline has been involved in various bird conservation programs for over 20 years. She hold a Ph.D. from Florida State University in Ecology and Evolution where she focused on the behavioral ecology of the Bahama Parrot on Abaco Island. Caroline also has experience working for national and international government organization such as the US Fish and Wildlife Service on bird related issues. She has worked on conservation issues for a broad range of bird species including, Baird’s Sparrows, Woodpecker species, Parrots, and Seabirds.
