Speakers: Dr. Natasha Vanderhoff, Jacksonville University, and Mike Taylor, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
Artificial lighting at night can be deadly for migrating birds. Our presenters will discuss the dangers of light pollution for birds and other wildlife, and describe how a local initiative is working to reduce those hazards in Northeast Florida.
Natasha Vanderhoff, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Biology and Marine Science at Jacksonville University. Dr. Vanderhoff got her first bird book when she was twelve and has been hooked ever since. Her core area of interest is behavioral ecology, a discipline within animal behavior that seeks to find evolutionary explanations for behavior, and her doctoral dissertation focused on the foraging and vocal behavior of American Robins. Dr. Vanderhoff teaches biological diversity, ornithology, evolution, and animal behavior at Jacksonville University and can often be found birding at JU’s beautiful campus.
Mike Taylor is the Curator of Herps, Birds and Others at the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens and is the project lead for the Lights Out Northeast Florida initiative, a partnership between the Zoo, Duval Audubon Society, and St. Johns County Audubon Society. Mike has more than 35 years of experience working with captive animal collections and manages the reptile, amphibian, and fishes collections at JZG as well as all of the Zoo’s avian residents.
