The secretive nature of this bird and its habit of staying motionless for long periods of time, together with its low numbers makes this attractive bird really tough to see. Preferring mangrove swamps and tropical hardwood forests, the species is found along Florida’s southern coasts. Mangrove Cuckoos seem to call just as it begins to rain, earning them the nickname “Rain Crow”. They may be easiest to find from a kayak or small boat as you paddle quietly under the mangroves.
