What is a Big Year?

A “Big Year” is a challenge to see as many species as possible between January 1st and December 31st of a given year. Though the Big Year concept was created by the birding community, we are challenging wildlife viewers across the state to join us in both bird and butterfly Big Years!

Our Wings Over Florida Big Year challenge is for everyone, from the most seasoned wildlife viewers to casual backyard observers. As long as you see at least 50 species of birds or 20 butterflies, you are eligible for a certificate.

You can challenge your friends and family to see who can see the most species, or just compete against your own personal best record. However you approach your Big Year, we hope that your quest for birds and butterflies will help you learn more about our native wildlife and take you on incredible outdoor adventures across the state!
