This family friendly site has a boardwalk through tropical maritime hammock good for songbirds during spring and fall migration, continuing on to mangroves out to the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW); don’t miss the observation tower and the spectacular views it provides! Check the ICW for plunging terns year-round and Red-breasted Mergansers in winter, as well as the mangrove edge for waders like Yellow-crowned Night Herons. Visit the butterfly garden to enjoy close-up views of Monarchs, Zebra Longwings, and Cassius Blues; ask about earning your Wings Over Florida butterfly certificate at the nature center. The nature center also offers a whole range of educational programs; call ahead for information on guided tours or classes on South Florida’s unique habitats. Be sure to check out the four outdoor saltwater aquariums, each of which represents a different South Florida marine habitat. Gumbo Limbo also offers off-site guided trips to other nearby trail sites like Spanish River Park.
