Saltmarsh Sparrow by James Hill

This wonderful gem of a park is located on a peninsula at the south end of the City of St. Augustine. Approximately 13 acres of uplands are surrounded by hundreds of acres of salt marsh, offering expansive views of a natural area where over 140 bird species have been documented. Walk or bicycle the ½ mile long paved trail that loops around the peninsula while enjoying year-round viewing of numerous kinds of wading and shore birds in the salt marsh adjacent to the park. Roseate Spoonbills and Clapper Rails are frequent visitors. In the winter, a greater variety of birds visit the park. Look overhead for Northern Harriers, American Kestrels and Bald Eagles, and sparrows and warblers foraging in the brush and ground cover. Nine species of sparrows have been documented at this location, including Nelson’s, Seaside, Saltmarsh and Savannah Sparrow.
