Alligator Lake Recreation Area
Visitors to this public recreation area have 12 miles of hiking/biking trails to wander. From the north end of the parking area, hike the 3-mile perimeter loop trail, which runs atop a dike. The trail passes fields that retain water and host shorebirds and sparrows. After 1 mile, the dike dives into hardwood hammock good for songbird migrants then follows the cypress-lined lake edge. Look for wading birds such as American Bittern (winter) and Least Bittern (summer) around the lake and its associated marshes. Up to 15 species of duck may be present from late fall to early spring; Greater White-fronted Goose and Snow Goose have been recorded. Rarities such as Masked Duck, Ruff, Vermilion Flycatcher, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, and White-faced Ibis have been found. Four Rivers Audubon Society offer bird walks here between September and May. Herpers should keep an eye out for Southern Toad, Pig Frog, Southeastern Slimy Salamander, Florida Snapping Turtle, and Eastern Glass Lizards. Amenities at this site include covere picnic pavilions and restrooms making it an ideal site for an outdoor family adventure. The site also has a canoe launch and canoe trail.
