Big Shoals Public Lands
Together, Big Shoals State Park, State Forest and Wildlife Management Area comprise the Big Shoals Public Lands, a wild and impressive property that borders the majestic Suwannee River. The property has the largest whitewater rapids in the state, plus scenic vistas from 80-foot high limestone bluffs above the river. With 33 miles of trails and the river to explore, visitors have numerous options for a fun-filled day. The Little Shoals/main entrance offers access roads through sandhills and hardwood hammocks on the western end of the property, with trails winding down to the Little Shoals section of the river. The paved, multi-use Woodpecker Trail connects the two portions of the state park. Farther north on CR 135, the Big Shoals entrance provides access to the Long Branch Trail and Big Shoals Trail. The latter is an excellent trail for birding; it leads along the river to wet lowlands good for songbirds such as Hooded Warbler and Acadian Flycatcher. Look for Black-crowned Night-Herons along the river corridor. A large bat house inhabited by Brazilian Free-tailed Bats is located near the Big Shoals parking area. A canoe/kayak launch is located at the Big Shoals entrance; call ahead, as water levels may be too low or too high for paddling.
