Camp Milton Historic Preserve
The former site of the largest Confederate Army encampment in Florida and several Civil War skirmishes, this family friendly preserve offers great birding during migration and winter. Paved trails meander through open fields and mixed pine/hardwood forests, past longleaf pine regeneration areas and down to a small creek. Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Meadowlark, Palm Warbler, and Loggerhead Shrike can be found in and around the fields by the entrance. Raptors like Bald Eagle, American Kestrel, and Sharp-shinned Hawk (winter) may be spotted overhead. Check the creek area for migrant songbirds like Red-eyed Vireo, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Eastern Phoebe. In winter, American Robins can be seen feeding in the open fields and Orange-crowned Warbler and Hermit Thrush can be found. If time permits, take the adjoining 15-mile Jacksonville-Baldwin Trail (a paved, mostly shaded, multi-use trail) on the north side of the preserve for songbirds, Wild Turkey and White-tailed Deer.
