Crane Point Museum and Nature Center
This 63-acre site is a tropical oasis amidst the development in the middle Keys. Thatch palm and tropical hardwood hammock, along with occasional freshwater ponds, provide habitat for a plethora of migrating songbirds; more than 20 species of wood-warbler have been recorded. In fall, Ovenbirds and Prairie Warblers are especially common. Black-whiskered Vireos nest on the property and are quite easy to find around the nature center buildings. White-crowned Pigeon, another Keys specialty can also be found. Find fruiting poisonwood trees and there is a good chance you will find the pigeons. A trail loop system with educational signage takes you through four hammock types. Tidal lagoons, as well as the tip of the peninsula looking out at Rachel Key in Florida Bay, give views of spring-nesting seabirds and year-round views of waders. Shorebirds congregate at low tide and Magnificent Frigatebirds wheel among the Brown Pelicans overhead. Trolley tours run daily and Kayak tours are offered on Tuesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings. Call ahead for reservations.
