Escribano Point WMA
Nestled between Blackwater Bay and Eglin Air Force Base, this unique and beautiful natural area is accessed from Highway 87 by driving through the westernmost portion of the air force base. The remote and diverse landscapes found here range from the sandhill at the entrance of the property to pine flatwoods, cypress swamp, coastal marsh and bayside beaches. Paddling along the ten miles of shoreline will provide the best chance of spotting occasional residents like Least, Forster’s, and Sandwich Terns and Black Skimmers. Alligators and marsh birds can be seen in Fundy Bayou among the marsh grasses. On land there are several hiking trails that meander through the pine flatwoods and scrub forest, where Brown-headed Nuthatches and Eastern Towhees can be found year-round. Look for White-eyed Vireos and migrating warblers. Florida Black Bears and Red Foxes can sometimes be glimpsed crossing the road before slipping back into the woods. Be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. During the rainy season knee boots are recommended, as much of Escribano is muddy and wet.
