Estero Bay Preserve State Park
Bring lots of water and let the almost 10 miles of trails at this site take you through many habitats, including pine flatwoods, oak scrub, mangrove swamp, coastal dunes and isolated cypress domes. The Estero River borders this property on its south end (bring your canoe!) and the trails wind through protected land leading out to Estero Bay. Just about any group of birds you could imagine has habitat here: waders and terns at the bay; kingfishers, swallows and flycatchers at the river; woodpeckers, hawks and sparrows in the flatwoods; warblers in the cypress domes. Swallow-tailed Kites cruise over during spring, and Bald Eagles are a known breeding species. Check out both trailheads, one is off Winkler Rd. and the other off Broadway Rd. for a great experience. Call ahead for ADA trail access.
