Gumbo Limbo Nature Center
This family friendly site has a boardwalk through a tropical maritime hammock, good for songbirds during spring and fall migration. Continue on through mangroves out to the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW); Watch for Osprey families during breeding season and Belted Kingfishers in winter, as well as waders like Yellow-crowned Night Herons along the mangrove’s edge. Visit the butterfly garden to enjoy close-up views of monarchs, zebra longwings, and Cassius blues; ask about earning your Wings Over Florida butterfly certificate at the nature center. The nature center also offers a whole range of educational programs; call ahead for information on guided tours or classes on South Florida’s unique habitats. Be sure to check out the four outdoor saltwater aquariums, each of which represents a different South Florida marine habitat, and the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center where most patients are successfully treated for their injuries and illnesses, before being released back into their ocean home.
