Hickey’s Creek Mitigation Park
This site offers everything from open, scrubby flatwoods to lush hardwoods along Hickey Creek itself. Follow the Palmetto Pines Trail for your best chance to see the small population of Florida Scrub-Jays that calls this park home. The North Marsh Trail leads to overlooks on a wetland, good for a variety of waders and swallows. Hickey Creek Trail is great for warblers during migration, as it winds its way alongside this tributary of the Caloosahatchee River; over 15 species have been recorded including Northern Waterthrush and Blackburnian Warbler. Bring your canoe or kayak and put in (be prepared to carry it for about a half mile) on this small tributary, follow it to the river itself, and cross over (carefully!) to Caloosahatchee Regional Park for a full day of birding and boating!
