Ichetucknee Springs State Park

Although world famous for its river tubing in warm weather, the wildlife, scenery and pristine waters at Ichetucknee Springs State Park are equally impressive. Winding through the park’s hardwood forest stands and wetlands are a clear spring run and the first 3.5 miles of the 6-mile Ichetucknee River, where sightings of Wood Duck, Anhinga, Limpkin, Broad-winged Hawk, Mississippi Kite, and Prothonotary Warbler are possible. A one-way paddling trip from the north entrance to the southern take-out point is about 2 hours (shuttle service available in summer only). Canoe rentals and shuttle services are available from vendors outside the park. Walk the Blue Hole Nature Trail at the north entrance, which leads through floodplain lowlands to the park’s largest spring. The Trestle Point/Pine Ridge Nature Trails are located on higher ground, where sandhills offer Southeastern American Kestrel, Wild Turkey and Bachman’s Sparrows. The south entrance also has hiking/biking trails; Tram Rd. is easy going, but is open from October through April only. More than 50 species of butterfly have been recorded, including Sleepy Orange, Swarthy Skipper, Meske’s Skipper, Pearl Crescent and Spring Azure. The headspring is a designated National Natural Landmark; take your snorkeling gear to enjoy underwater encounters with Florida Gar, Musk Turtles and more.
