Off the south side of Canal 6, about a mile inside the main entrance, bird the West Jupiter Wetlands Trail through wetlands and flatwoods where Bachman’s Sparrows, Snail Kites and Sandhill Cranes are possible (wear waterproof footwear). A covered viewing platform about a mile in on the trail is a great place to see wading birds. Along Canal 6, Belted Kingfishers and Red-shouldered Hawks are common. At the pond inside Gate 2, expect to see and/or hear Limpkins. The Old Jupiter-Indiantown Grade trail offers the typical suite of Florida wading birds. The birding and wildlife viewing at this WEA is best in cooler months when the wetlands begin to dry up. This is when spectacular gatherings of wading birds can be seen. Other species to look for include Swallow-tailed Kite (summer), Common Ground-Dove, and wintering Swamp Sparrows.
