John D. Macarthur State Park
This Palm Beach County state park boasts a very respectable bird checklist; over 175 species have been recorded. At the northernmost parking area, bird the Satinleaf Trail for migratory songbirds in season like Kentucky Warblers, Ovenbirds, and Yellow-billed Cuckoos, then walk or ride the long boardwalk across the lagoon to the beach overlooks. Here, look for raptors migrating and foraging along the dune line in September and October. At low tide, flats are exposed in the lagoon, so keep an eye peeled for waders like Reddish Egrets and Roseate Spoonbills as well as shorebirds like American Oystercatcher and Short-billed Dowitcher. In 2014, a Bananaquit was found at the park. Guided paddling trips and interpretive hikes are offered regularly, so call ahead for a schedule and reservations. This site can get very busy with beachgoers, so plan accordingly.
