Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden
This trail site is a special place where visitors can appreciate biodiversity and learn more about its importance. Celebrating over 85 years of history in 2018, it continues to protect native flora and fauna in the region. For instance, the forest and Garden has two of the last remaining fresh water ponds in the Keys and is a major migratory stopping point for north-and-southbound birds. This “one of a kind” US tropical forest and garden is filled with butterflies, birds, plants and beautiful flowers. Pick up a Garden Guide that describes the 10 self-guided information tours that includes two butterfly gardens, four wetland habitats and 2 exhibits. Ask about earning your ‘Wings Over Florida Butterfly Certificate’. This property is also a magnet for Florida specialties such as Short-tailed Hawk, White-crowned Pigeon and Black-whiskered Vireo. In winter and migration, check the large trees at the entrance for Western Kingbirds and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers. Ask about recent sightings of rarities; Bahama Mockingbird, Yellow-green Vireo, MacGillivray’s Warbler, and Western Spindalis have been spotted in past years. Over 200 species have been recorded at this site on eBird. Special birders’ hours are offered in April and September with several family friendly events offered during the calendar year; please call ahead for more details.
