Lake Region Audubon Society’s Street Nature Center
Located in a quiet neighborhood, the Street Nature Center is owned by the Lake Region Audubon Society and operated by its volunteers. The property is excellent for migrants like Indigo Buntings during migration and both Chipping Sparrows and Painted Buntings visit in winter. The site’s warbler list tops 25 species including Magnolia, Black-throated Green and Prairie. Check out the viewing area at the Howe House, then walk the trails through hardwood forest down to the waterfront of Lake Ned, where Limpkins and Bald Eagles are likely. On rainy days, listen for Barking Treefrogs calling from the tree tops. Other amphibians and reptiles like Southern Leopard Frogs, Bullfrogs and harmless Banded Water Snakes occur along the lake and pond. An interpretive trail runs along a high dry ridge and by a demonstration butterfly garden. Watch for Gopher Tortoises, Little Brown (Ground) Skinks and Southern Black Racers. The Street Nature Center also offers a variety of educational programs and classes to youths and adults. Call for more details.
