Demetree Tract
Named for the two branches of the Econlockhatchee River which flow through the site, this state forest has over 150 bird species and 20 miles of hiking trails on two recommended parcels; the Demetree Tract and the Kilbee Tract. The Demetree Tract off Snowhill Rd. has a parking area surrounded by improved pasture, and a visitor center with maps and information. Start by birding the pasture for Eastern Meadowlarks, Eastern Bluebirds, winter sparrows, and raptors, then follow the trail southwest down to the river boardwalk. The trail also snakes westward for miles along (and through) the treeline as it follows the river. Take the Flagler Trail, then the Kolokee Trail for a diversity of resident and migratory songbirds like Summer Tanagers, Blue Grosbeaks, Black-throated Blue Warblers and Red-eyed Vireos. The multi-use Flagler Trail leads north to the Geneva Wilderness Area. Hiker access for the Kolokee Trail is provided on the west side of the property, off CR 426 at Barr St. Want to see birds via the river? A canoe launch is located less than a mile south of the Demetree entrance on Snowhill Rd.
