Little Manatee River State Park
Twelve natural communities are represented at this state park, including flatwoods, scrub, hydric and xeric hammocks, floodplain forest and freshwater swamp. The Little Manatee River flows for over 4 miles through the park and separates the main public use area on the south side of the river from the wilderness area on the north side. Raptors such as Short-tailed Hawk are occasionally spotted soaring above; Osprey, Swallow-tailed Kite and Red-shouldered Hawk are more common. Northern Bobwhite, Wild Turkey, Common Ground-Dove, Red-headed Woodpecker, and Northern Flicker all breed within the park. One family of Florida Scrub-Jays can be found on the north side of the river. Butterfly viewers may encounter queen, viceroy, monarch, giant swallowtail, cloudless sulphur, and common buckeye. Sherman’s fox squirrel, and river otter are resident. Bring water and bug spray; bicycles and canoes can be rented in the park. Four camping options (primitive, full, youth and equestrian), a canoe launch and 12 miles of equestrian trails are also available.
