Pine Island Conservation Area

Another part of Brevard County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands program, this site has viewing blinds on several of the interior ponds good for scoping migratory ducks like Blue-winged Teal and American Wigeon. Mottled Ducks are present all year. Pines on the west side of the property attract Great Crested Flycatchers and Pine Warblers, and the salt marsh and mangroves along the Indian River Lagoon harbor Roseate Spoonbills, Tricolored Herons and Black-necked Stilts. Grab a map at the entrance kiosk, and consider bringing a canoe or kayak which can be launched in the series of ponds at the north and south ends of the property. You may also paddle via Sam’s Creek (look for resting manatees) out to the lagoon, then return back up the coast to the launch again. Other wildlife species recorded here include Bobcats, River Otters and American Alligators.
