Point Washington State Forest
Point Washington State Forest offers 3-, 5- and 10-mile hiking loops through longleaf pine flatwoods, coastal scrub and sandhills, and the Longleaf Greenway Trail that runs 8 miles the length of the state forest east to west. Bachman’s Sparrows can be heard singing between April and June in areas of wiregrass and palmetto in the southern half of the 3-mile loop. The eastern boundary of this loop crosses the west arm of Peach Creek, where you can listen for songbirds and watch for Red-shouldered Hawks. Cooper’s Hawks can be seen dashing through the flatwoods and Eastern Towhees and Common Yellowthroats are abundant. Wintering sparrows such as Vesper and White-throated can be present and Golden-crowned Kinglet has been recorded. The forest’s trail system connects to Grayton Beach State Park for extended birding adventures.
