Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve
If you have been looking for an astounding birding experience within a major metropolitan area in South Florida, this is it. With characteristics of much larger and more well-known sites nearby, this site offers some of the best birding around. The boardwalk invites you to walk slowly and silently through the freshwater swamp and hardwood hammocks, watching the wildlife at close range. Look for Wood Ducks, Wood Storks, both species of night heron, Red-shouldered Hawks and Barred Owls. During spring and fall migration there can be good numbers of songbirds present; more than 30 species of wood-warbler are on the preserve’s checklist. Blinds and viewing platforms offer places to sit for long periods and observe. Roving volunteers provide education and optics. Take your time here and enjoy the small-scale majesty of a site that rivals the more famous boardwalks in Florida. Guided walks along the boardwalk are offered on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. Registration opens 30 minutes prior to the guided walk at the boardwalk entrance.
