Spanish River Park
This city park has extensive parking areas and picnic pavilions under large, old ficus and gumbo limbo trees, and has a reputation as a good spot for migratory songbird fallouts. Best bets are birding the hiking trail that bounds the western edge of the park, checking the trees for migrants like Blue-winged Warbler and Swainson’s Thrush; more than 25 species of wood warbler have been recorded. The convoluted parking areas provide a lot of access to edge cover and big trees that are attractive to songbirds. Rarities like Cuban Pewee, La Sagra’s Flycatcher and Western Spindalis have been recorded. There is an entry fee to the park, however, visitors are permitted to park in the metered spots on Ocean Rd. and walk into the park for free. Staff at the nearby Gumbo Limbo Nature Center offer guided field trips to the park.
