Spirit of the Wild Wildlife Management Area
With thousands of acres of restored pastures, grasslands, flatwoods, wetlands and hardwood and palm hammocks, Spirit-of-the-Wild Wildlife Management Area is another vital component in the region’s mosaic of conservation lands. These lands benefit the Florida black bear, Florida panther and other protected species. Miles of unpaved loop roads make this wildlife management area a fun destination for car birding; the roads are open to the public year-round and are generally passable for two-wheel-drive vehicles. View a map of the property on the kiosk at the main entrance on County Road 832. Hikers can also explore the many numbered trails on the eastern portion of the property. Visitors may encounter breeding Swallow-tailed Kite, Crested Caracara, Northern Bobwhite, Eastern Meadowlark and Loggerhead Shrike plus Mottled Duck, Wood Stork, Sandhill Crane and Common Ground-Dove. As you wander, watch for Wild Turkey, white-tailed deer, bobcat, river otter and Big Cypress fox squirrels. Fireflies have been known to put on impressive sum¬mer shows as evening falls. Seasonal hunting takes place at this site; please call or check online for more information.
