West Lake Park and Anne Kolb Nature Center
West Lake Park consists of the Anne Kolb Nature Center (north) and West Lake Park Recreation Area (south) located on Sheridan Street. West Lake has a north and south basin located west of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Many short trails are available. At Anne Kolb, bird the mangrove boardwalks for Yellow-crowned Night Herons, and check the vantages of the ICW for shorebirds, gulls and terns. Look for soaring Short-tailed Hawks in winter. The nature center exhibit hall has a small entrance fee. Canoe/kayak rentals and guided boat tours of the mangroves are available. As in all of South Florida, even birding the trees in the parking lot can be fruitful; over 15 species of wood-warbler have been recorded and a Thick-billed Vireo was found here in May 2005.
