The Kings Bay Trail offers a pleasant, cool-weather paddle at the headwaters of the Crystal River. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent at Pete’s Pier and from local dive shops and other area vendors, or bring your own. Significant open water makes paddling the Kings Bay Trail challenging on windy days. Stop by the Crystal River/Chassahowitzka NWR Complex headquarters on SE King Bay Dr. for maps, additional information and restrooms. Kings Bay hosts flocks of wintering Lesser Scaup, American Coots and American White Pelicans. Wading birds and waterbirds like Yellow-crowned Night-Herons and Anhingas, plus gulls and Bald Eagles are frequently spotted. This area is also well known for its large wintering population of West Indian Manatees. Wood Storks and other waders may be visible behind the refuge office.
