Winding Waters Natural Area

This 548-acre urban oasis preserves freshwater wetlands, cypress swamps and slash pine forests in urban West Palm Beach. Several areas previously cleared for agricultural purposes have been restored to shallow-water and deep-water marshes. These diverse habitats attract abundant birdlife with Bald Eagles, Wood Storks, Roseate Spoonbills, Loggerhead Shrikes, Anhingas and Belted Kingfishers making regular appearances. One of the best places to view birds (and alligators, dragonflies, turtles and fish) is the observation platform and boardwalk, located just 0.5 miles from the parking lot. A paved walking trail makes it easy for everyone to access this area. Search near the water’s edge for Green Herons waiting to ambush a fish or look for Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Pied-billed Grebes and American Coots gliding along the water’s surface. Birders looking for more of a challenge can hike the 4.3-mile trail that circles the entire wetland or take to the water on the 3.3-mile canoe and kayak trail. Piles of apple snail shells on the shore mean a Snail Kite may have a perch nearby. Bring your binoculars and explore this Palm Beach County natural treasure.
